How do ZETIA works?

ZETIA (ezetimibe) is a drug used to treat high cholesterol that works differently than statins, which lower cholesterol by 35 to 60% in most patients and reduce the risk of heart attack. Statins work by blocking an enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.

The drug acts on the brush border of the small intestine and inhibits the absorption of cholesterol. This leads to a decrease in the delivery of intestinal cholesterol to the liver. This causes a reduction of hepatic cholesterol stores and an increase in clearance of cholesterol from the blood; this distinct mechanism is complementary to that of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors and of fenofibrate.

Dosage :

It is available as 10mg tablet usually prescribed once daily with or without food.

No dosage adjustment is  needed for mild to moderate liver or kidney impairment.

Concomitant Lipid-Lowering Therapy

ZETIA may be administered with a statin (in patients with primary hyperlipidaemia) or with fenofibrate (in patients with mixed hyperlipidaemia) for incremental effect. For convenience, the daily dose of ZETIA may be taken at the same time as the statin or fenofibrate, according to the dosing recommendations for the respective medications.
