About Spinous Process
Spinous process is a bony landmark that forms a major part of the vertebra. The spinous process is a bony projection of the posterior part of each vertebra. The Spinous process protrudes where the laminae of the vertebral arch join and provides the point of attachment for muscles and ligaments of the spine.
The ridges that could be felt through the skin if we touch our back along the spinal length are the spinous processes.
Torsion in the neck such as whiplash can cause the spinous process to fracture. It is a minor fracture known as “clay shovelers fracture” that commonly occurs in the upper spine at Cervical 6, Cervical 7 or Thorasic 1 vertebra. The little ridges you feel when you move up and down are your spinous processes. Muscles that are attached to the spinous process are found in the neck, head and back. Direct trauma that could lead to a fracture of the spinous process includes for eg. a car accident or a fall. Spinous process fracture can produce symptoms like back pain, decreased ability to move, a crunch sound, numbness and tingling sensation.
