About Mucinex

It relieves chest congestion, thins and loosens mucus that causes chest congestion and makes it easier to cough up the mucus and clear the airways. This drug comes in tablet form and is taken every 12 hours with a full glass of water.

You should not take this Mucinex if you are allergic to it if you are breastfeeding, if you ever had Stevens-Johnson syndrome (A rare, serious disease of the skin and mucous membrane), or if you are 12 years old or younger. Take extra precaution while using this drug if you have a kidney failure, liver disorder or stomach ulcers. During pregnancy, this medicine should only be used if benefits outweigh the risks.

How does Mucinex work?

It helps in reducing chest congestions caused by colds, allergies, or infections. It works by thinning the mucus in the air passages. While it can help control symptoms but it doesn’t treat the cause of congestion.

How to use Mucinex

Always take this drug in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor or pharmacist. Swallow it as a whole. Do not crush, chew or break it. It can be taken with or without food, but it is better to take Mucinex tablet at a fixed time.

  • Do not take Mucinex if you have known allergy to it.
  • Stop using it and consult your doctor immediately if you develop breathing difficulty swelling on your face, neck throat or tongue (severe allergic reactions).
  • Do not take Mucinex if you are taking more than one cough and cold medicine.
  • Consult your doctor before you start taking this medicine if you have asthma, inflammation of air passages (bronchitis), lung disorder in which the flow of air to the lungs is blocked (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – COPD) such as emphysema, smokers cough, porphyria (a rare blood pigment disorder that affects skin and other organs).
  • Consult your doctor before you start Mucinex if you are suffering from liver or kidney problems, or if you are taking alcohol.
  • This medicine should not be combined with cough suppressants in the treatment of cough.
  • Consult your doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve within SEVEN days, tend to recur, or are accompanied by a fever, rash, or persistent headache.
  • It is important to tell your doctor while undergoing urine tests if have recently taken or are taking Mucinex as it can affect some results.
  • Do not take Mucinex if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless it is advised by your doctor.
  • Use within FOUR weeks of opening the bottle; discard after FOUR weeks of opening even if not used (consult your pharmacist for the procedure to dispose).

This medicine is sold under many different brand names and comes as a capsule, a tablet, extended-release (long-acting) tablet, syrup and a dissolving granule. Available brands of Mucinex include:

Mucinex Dosage

  • Adults and children 12 years of age and over: ONE or TWO tablets every 12 hours. Do not exceed FOUR tablets in 24 hours.
  • Do not use Mucinex tablets Children WHO ARE under 12 years of age
  • Take with a full glass of water
  • This medicine can be administered without regard to the timing of meals
  • If you miss the dosage take as soon as possible, and if it is near to next dose, skip the missing dosage continue the regular dosage. Do not take extra doses.

Precautions while taking Mucinex

Before taking, tell your pharmacist or doctor if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your doctor for more information.

Before using this Mucinex, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: breathing problems such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, smoker’s cough and asthma), cough with blood (hemoptysis) or large amounts of mucus.

Before having this medicine, tell your doctor about all the products you use (including herbal products, prescription drugs, and non-prescription drugs).

During pregnancy, it should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor.

It is unknown if Mucinex passes into breast milk. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before breastfeeding.
