What Is Botox?
Botox is used for removing wrinkles. It is available in the form of powder for injection. It is reconstituted with sodium chloride before injection. Botox was approved for aesthetic treatment in the year 2002. The active ingredient used in Botox is onabotulinumtoxinA. Apart from cosmetic treatment, Botox is also used for various indications such as bladder dysfunction due to neurological disorder.

Both Dysport and Botox are obtained from the botulinum neurotoxin synthesized by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. However, there are various types of the type A botulinum neurotoxins available. While Dysport contains abobotulinumtoxinA, Botox contains onabotulinumtoxinA. It is also to be noted that formulations containing all the type A neurotoxins are different and are not interchangeable.

Specific potency of the 150kD is different for abobotulinumtoxinA and onabotulinumtoxinA. While abobotulinumtoxinA has a specific potency of 154 units/ng, onabotulinumtoxinA has a specific potency of 137 units/ng. It indicates that a higher amount of Dysport is required to achieve results like Botox. Molecular size in Dysport is smaller as compared to Botox thereby providing faster action to Dysport. Because of the smaller molecular size and a higher rate of diffusion, the molecules of Dysport spreads to a broader area as compared to Botox.

There are pharmacological differences between Dysport and Botox. The addition of albumin as protective substances and volume of injection also alters the duration of action of the formulations. Dose for Dysport and Botox are different. These doses are non-interchangeable. Single-usee vial of Botox contains 50 or 100 units of onabotulinumtoxinA and multi-use vial of Botox contains 100 or 200 units of onabotulinumtoxinA. The powder should be diluted with sodium chloride before injecting it. On the other hand, the single-use vial of Dysport contains 300 or 500 units of abobotulinumtoxinA. While injecting botulinum toxin product for the first time, either Dysport or Botox, the lowest recommended dose should be used.

Contrary results are obtained from various studies. Some studies indicate that the duration of action of Dysport was longer as compared to Botox while other studies found no difference in duration of action. At least one study concludes that the onset of action of Dysport was quicker as compared to Botox and Dysport injection was also found to be less painful.

Botox has a broad scope in terms of approved indications. The indications approved for Botox not only include cosmetic treatment rather it is used in bladder dysfunction caused due to neurological disorders, upper and lower limb spasticity, hyperhidrosis, and cervical dystonia. Dysport is approved for cervical dystonia and lower limb spasticity along with the treatment of glabellar lines.
Dynamic and Static wrinkles – Dysport vs Botox
Dynamic wrinkles are the lines that initiate from the glabella region and move upwards to the forehead. Static wrinkles are the lines that occur in the neck, jaw, and cheeks and occurs due to sagging skin.
